Delimitation: Deputy CM Bhatti Vikramarka calls for all-party meeting

HYDERABAD: Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka has announced that an all-party meeting will soon be convened to address concerns regarding the proposed delimitation of constituencies based on population. The state government fears that such delimitation could adversely affect Telangana’s political landscape.

In an open letter co-authored with senior leader K. Jana Reddy, Bhatti Vikramarka invited various political parties to participate in the forthcoming discussions. The letter emphasized the potential injustice that population-based delimitation could inflict on Telangana, underscoring the need for a united front to safeguard the state’s interests.

The decision to hold this meeting follows deliberations in a recent cabinet session led by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. The cabinet resolved to engage all political entities in formulating a resolution to be submitted to the central government, aiming to mitigate any negative impacts arising from the proposed delimitation.

The government has stressed the importance of collective action, urging leaders from all parties to attend the meeting. Details regarding the date and venue will be announced shortly.

This initiative reflects a broader concern among southern states, which have been vocal about the potential disadvantages of population-based delimitation. States with lower population growth rates fear reduced representation, leading to calls for alternative approaches or the use of historical population data, such as that from the 1971 census, as a basis for delimitation.
