DELHI: An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck Afghanistan early Wednesday morning, with tremors reportedly felt as far as India’s capital region of Delhi-NCR.
The epicentre was located at a depth of 121 kilometres, approximately 164 kilometres from the city of Baghlan. Initially, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported the quake as having a magnitude of 6.4 before revising it to 5.9.
While strong tremors were experienced in parts of northern India, especially in the Delhi-NCR region, no immediate reports of casualties or property damage have emerged from Afghanistan. Authorities are yet to provide a detailed assessment of the impact.
The seismic event underscores the region’s vulnerability to tectonic activity, and monitoring agencies are continuing to observe the situation closely.
