Hyderabad: Evening showers caused widespread traffic snarls across Hyderabad’s IT corridor on Wednesday, with key routes between Madhapur, Gachibowli, and Lingampally choking under peak-hour congestion.
A brief spell of rain led to bumper-to-bumper traffic from IKEA to Mindspace, and further along the Hitec City–KPHB stretch. Vehicles lined up for kilometres as commuters heading home from the office were caught in a gridlock.
Flyovers around IKEA, Cable Bridge, Kondapur, and Gachibowli saw long delays. Areas like Lingampally, already strained under evening traffic, saw bottlenecks intensify.
In several zones, even minor rainfall triggers panic among motorists. Poor drainage leaves roads waterlogged and unpassable, especially during school and office dispersal times. A similar incident two weeks ago on a Friday had left major junctions flooded and paralysed for hours.
In response, senior officials from the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA), GHMC, and Traffic Police initiated a coordinated review.
Three departments identified the zones worst-hit during recent rains. They traced water stagnation on flyovers to clogged grills choked with silt and garbage. Cleaning operations have begun across all 70 flyovers under GHMC limits, led by HYDRAA monsoon emergency teams.
Additionally, static response teams from traffic, municipal, and water board departments will be deployed at 141 waterlogging points. Each location will be staffed with personnel from all three agencies, who will act during rainfall to prevent blockages. Pumps and motors will be used to immediately drain accumulated water off the roads.
