Hyderabad: Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka pledged to uncover what he called coordinated efforts by BRS, BJP, and TDP to compromise Telangana’s water rights under the guise of Banakacherla and Polavaram projects.
At a Kollapur public meeting in Nagarkurnool district, Bhatti alleged that the three parties had colluded to merge seven mandals of Khammam into Andhra Pradesh through an ordinance. He described the act as a betrayal of Telangana’s territorial and resource integrity.
Bhatti criticised the BRS government’s decade-long silence, blaming their inaction for Banakacherla gaining traction. He credited Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy with stopping the proposal after they engaged the Centre in Delhi.
He refuted Andhra Pradesh Minister Lokesh’s claim that Telangana was wasting water. Bhatti argued that downstream flows exist only because previous governments left upstream projects incomplete. He insisted Telangana would not discuss Banakacherla until its legal water entitlements are fully met.
Turning to irrigation, Bhatti said the BRS promised water, funds, and jobs, but delivered none. “Not one major project on the Krishna or Godavari rivers was completed,” he said. In contrast, Congress governments built Jurala, Nettempadu, Koilsagar, Kalwakurthy, Srisailam, and Nagarjunasagar.
He slammed K. Chandrashekar Rao for abandoning the Congress-backed Pranahita-Chevella project at 152 metres. Instead, the BRS opted for Kaleshwaram at 100 metres, which later collapsed despite ₹1.2 lakh crore in spending. “Pranahita-Chevella would have cost only ₹38,000 crore,” he said.
Bhatti accused the BRS of redesigning projects to loot the exchequer rather than irrigate land. “Not a single acre received water,” he said. He also condemned the previous government’s suppression of dissent, claiming that arrests and fear stifled democracy.
He said the current government has revived democratic governance and is committed to serving the people without fear or favour.
