Hyderabad: Adilabad police arrested two men on Thursday for impersonating police officers and extorting money from jewellers in Ichoda and other regions.
According to Superintendent of Police Akhil Mahajan, the accused, identified as Irfan and Praveen posed as sub-inspector and circle inspector to intimidate gold shop owners. Claiming that the shops were involved in fraudulent gold sales, they threatened to file cases unless money was paid.
The duo extorted ₹18 lakh from jewellers by impersonating officials. Police said they had also operated in Hyderabad and Vijayawada using similar tactics. A car, an auto, and a Royal Enfield motorcycle were seized from them.
Cases have also been booked against others who assisted the accused in carrying out the impersonation. Police warned traders and the public to remain alert against such fraudsters.
