Hyderabad: A farmer from Medak district who attempted suicide over mounting debts died during treatment at Gandhi Hospital, Secunderabad, on Thursday evening, police said.
Kolcharam Sub-Inspector Mohammed Mohinuddin identified the deceased as Veerudi Narasimhulu (42), a resident of Pothireddipalli village. Narasimhulu, who relied on farming for his livelihood, had borrowed about ₹5 lakh for the marriages of his two daughters.
Unable to clear the debt with the income from his small farmland, Narasimhulu and his wife Yashodamma consumed pesticide at their home on September 14 after the family went to sleep.
When the couple cried out in pain, neighbours rushed in and found them unconscious. They shifted the two to Medak district hospital. Doctors later referred them to Gandhi Hospital, Secunderabad, for advanced care.
Despite efforts by doctors, Narasimhulu died on Thursday evening. Yashodamma is still undergoing treatment, police said.
Based on a complaint filed by the farmer’s relative, Balayya, police registered a case and started an investigation.
