Farmer dies after suicide attempt over police complaint by subcontractor

Hyderabad: A farmer who attempted suicide after a subcontractor filed a police complaint against him succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment in Hyderabad. The incident is linked to the ongoing revetment and road work under the Palamuru Rangareddy district reservoir project.

The deceased, Kommu Anjaneyulu (45), was a farmer from the mandal centre. His crop was allegedly destroyed when heavy machinery, operated by subcontractor Srinivas Reddy from Edula, ran over his field during the course of construction. When Anjaneyulu objected to the damage, Reddy lodged a complaint accusing him of obstructing government work.

Distressed by the complaint, Anjaneyulu consumed insecticide in an attempt to end his life. He was shifted to Hyderabad for emergency treatment but died during the course of care.

Following his death, the farmer’s family placed the body on the main road in front of the mandal office and held a protest procession. BC Political JAC State President Rachala Yugandhar Goud demanded ₹50 lakh compensation for the family and the immediate arrest of subcontractor Srinivas Reddy. CPM state leader MD Jabbar joined the Rasta Roko and expressed support for the aggrieved family.
