Hyderabad: Farmers in Shivvampet mandal of Medak district staged a road blockade on Monday, protesting the ongoing shortage of urea. Hundreds, including many women, blocked the Narsapur–Toopran highway for nearly 40 minutes, disrupting traffic and causing hardship to commuters.
They began gathering outside the Shivvampet Agricultural Cooperative Society from the early morning hours. Many waited in queues, hoping to receive urea for their crops. When officials told them the stock hadn’t arrived, the farmers launched a dharna and moved onto the road.
Urea shortage in Medak triggers protest, police intervene
Local police tried to pacify the crowd, but the farmers refused to back down. Sub-Inspector Madhukar Reddy reached the scene, spoke to agricultural officials, and informed the protesters that new urea stock would arrive the next day. Only then did the farmers call off the road blockade.
Farmers expressed their frustration with the shortage. “We left our work and stood in line for hours, but went home empty-handed,” one farmer said. “If we can’t apply urea on time, our crops will fail.”
They accused the government and officials of ignoring their struggles. Many demanded that authorities respond immediately and ensure steady urea supply across Medak.
