Hyderabad: A major fire broke out at a flat in Rajiv Gruhakalpa, Nizampet, on Wednesday after a Ganesh puja lamp accidentally fell and ignited household items
According to locals, the fire occurred at Block 60, Door No. 2, where Sirigiri Raju and his wife Sirigiri Joshna had been residing for the past decade. On the occasion of Vinayaka Chavithi, the couple had installed Lord Ganesha in their home and performed puja. After completing rituals, they locked the house and went out.
Puja lamp sparks fire, household destroyed
Police said the lamp used during puja is believed to have fallen, sparking the flames that quickly spread across the house. Neighbours noticed thick smoke emanating from the flat and alerted the family by phone. When Raju and Joshna rushed back, they found the house engulfed in flames.
Residents of the colony tried to douse the fire with water before fire personnel arrived. By then, most belongings inside were charred. Educational certificates, documents, and cash were destroyed in the blaze. The couple said gold ornaments weighing about seven tolas, kept in the house, were also missing after the incident.
Visuals from the spot showed burnt furniture and piles of ash strewn across rooms. Neighbours said the couple was inconsolable as years of savings and valuables were lost in a matter of minutes.
Authorities said the cause of the fire appeared accidental, but an official inquiry was being conducted. Police registered a case and advised residents to take precautions during festive pujas to avoid mishaps.
