Hyderabad: The Irrigation Department on Sunday released floodwater from the Kadem Narayan Reddy project in Nirmal district after heavy rains triggered a sharp rise in inflows. Officials opened four gates and discharged 26,809 cusecs into the Godavari River.
Rainfall in the upper catchment areas caused inflows to surge, with the reservoir receiving 23,460 cusecs by morning. To maintain safe levels, engineers initiated a controlled release.

The Kadem project has a full reservoir level of 700 feet and a storage capacity between 4.438 and 4.699 TMC. Officials opened four of the reservoir’s 18 gates to handle the increased volume.
They also diverted 637 cusecs through the Vedama canal and another 8 cusecs via the right canal. These measures aimed to relieve pressure on the reservoir and manage flood risk.
Executive Engineer Rathod Vittal said the department is monitoring the situation continuously. He urged residents, herders, farmers, and fishermen to stay away from the Godavari banks and avoid flood-prone areas.
