Hyderabad: Former minister and senior Congress leader Ramreddy Damodar Reddy died at AIG Hospital in Hyderabad at 10:10 p.m. on Wednesday. He was 73.
Family members admitted him after a prolonged illness. He breathed his last while undergoing treatment. Born on September 14, 1952, in Pathalingala village of Khammam district, Reddy built a political career spanning three decades.
Veteran Congress leader won five terms as MLA
Ramreddy Damodar Reddy entered the undivided Andhra Pradesh Assembly in 1985, winning from the Tungaturthi constituency as a Congress candidate. He retained the seat in 1989. Later, after denial of a party ticket, he contested as an Independent and secured a third straight win.
He won from the Suryapet constituency in 2004 and 2009. In the Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy cabinet, he served as Information Technology Minister. His brother Ramreddy Venkata Reddy won five times from Palair and also held the Endowments portfolio in the cabinets of Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and Kiran Kumar Reddy.
The family said his body will be placed at Red House in Suryapet on Friday for public homage. The funeral will follow later in the day.
