HYDERABAD: In a significant development in the phone tapping case that garnered national attention, former Special Intelligence Branch (SIB) Chief T. Prabhakar Rao has approached the Telangana High Court seeking bail. Rao, currently in the United States for medical treatment, cited health concerns, including cancer and a lung infection, as reasons for his bail plea. He emphasized that he had left for the U.S. prior to being named a suspect in the case and has been in regular contact with investigating officers during his stay abroad.
Rao refuted allegations of political affiliations, stating he has no ties with any political party. He asserted that during his tenure as SIB Chief, he performed his duties with integrity and denied accusations of colluding with the ruling party to tap phones of opposition members. He expressed distress over being labeled a suspect without substantial evidence and claimed the new Congress government is attempting to implicate him maliciously. A non-bailable warrant was issued against him on March 10, 2024, in connection with the phone tapping case.
