Hyderabad: Free bus celebrations are being held across Telangana today to mark 200 crore journeys completed by women under the state’s Mahalaxmi scheme.
The landmark was announced by the government on Tuesday, with events planned at all TSRTC depots, bus stations, and regional offices. Drivers, conductors, traffic staff, and security personnel involved in the scheme’s success will be honoured during the official programme, which will be led by Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar.
Launched by the Congress government after taking office, the Mahalaxmi scheme offers women free travel on RTC buses. As of July 23, 2025, officials confirmed over 200 crore free rides have been completed, resulting in an estimated ₹6,700 crore in savings on fares.
Daily ridership under the scheme now averages 30 lakh women across the state.
In a message to mark the occasion, Minister Ponnam Prabhakar conveyed greetings to women passengers and praised the scheme’s reach and public impact.
