Hyderabad: Ganesh immersion festivities in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh drew large crowds on Friday. At Keerthi Richmond Villas in Bandlaguda Jagir, residents auctioned the Ganesh laddu for Rs 2.32 crore, setting a new record.
Tradition of auction at Richmond Villas
The Richmond Villas community celebrates Vinayaka Navaratri every year. As part of the festival, they auction the main laddu before immersion. This year, the bidding ended at Rs 2,31,95,000, surpassing last year’s Rs 1.87 crore. The increase of more than Rs 45 lakh created a fresh benchmark in Hyderabad’s festive auctions.
Use of proceeds and community involvement
Organisers explained that the auction proceeds fund community development and welfare projects. Many residents see the bidding as both an act of devotion and a way to strengthen social unity. “It is about faith, pride, and sharing the festive spirit,” said one community leader.
Laddu auctions across Telugu states
Laddu auctions have become a prominent part of Ganesh festivities in many neighbourhoods. Communities often compete to set higher records, turning the laddu into a symbol of devotion and collective pride. In Hyderabad, areas such as Balapur and Uppal are also famous for their high-value bids.
Cultural and social impact
The funds raised through these auctions are usually spent on welfare, temple maintenance, or charitable causes. Residents believe the tradition combines devotion with service to society. This year, the record at Richmond Villas stood out as the highlight of the celebrations, reflecting the blend of generosity and festive spirit.
