Hyderabad: GHMC and HYDRAA officials reviewed flood prevention strategies for Ameerpet metro station and Maitrivanam after heavy rains submerged major stretches last month. Senior engineers inspected narrowed drainage routes and drafted plans for nala remodeling.
GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan and HYDRA Commissioner Ranganath inspected the affected zones on Thursday. They were joined by Zonal Commissioner Anuraag Jayanti, Chief Engineer Sahadev Ratnakar, and technical consultants. The team examined blockages and identified choke points along major drains.
Flood prevention strategies focus on drainage bottlenecks
Officials reported that the main channel, flowing through Krishna Kanth Park, narrows from 40 feet to just 10 feet where it crosses Ameerpet and SR Nagar main roads. This sharp reduction obstructs water flow and triggers road flooding during heavy monsoon spells.
The overflow from Madhuranagar and Srinivas Nagar West had recently inundated Ameerpet metro station and Maitrivanam. Runoff from Jubilee Hills, Venkatagiri, Rahmat Nagar, and Yousufguda also fed into the overloaded nala near Gayatri Nagar.
Engineers said a nala reconstruction plan was under preparation. They proposed widening the most constricted sections to restore original capacity. Officials noted that stricter field-level monitoring would continue until permanent works are executed.
