Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has intensified inspections of unsafe buildings and cellar excavations across the city ahead of forecast heavy rain this week. Commissioner Ronald Rose and the Chief City Planner held an online review with town planning officials on August 12 to assess progress and direct urgent action.
GHMC targets unsafe structures in rain alert drive
The Commissioner told officials to recheck all previously identified unsafe structures and excavation sites. He ordered immediate safety measures where risks remain and instructed teams to stay on high alert to prevent accidents. Special focus areas include Khairatabad, Secunderabad, and Charminar zones.
So far, officials have identified 685 dilapidated structures. They repaired or issued vacation orders for 327 of them. Teams are handling the remaining 358 through structural checks and counselling residents to vacate.
Of 154 cellar excavation sites, work such as retaining wall construction is complete at 61. Crews are still addressing safety measures at 93 locations. GHMC has also acted against 52 unauthorised cellars, issuing notices and beginning closures using construction and demolition waste.
The Commissioner directed all town planning staff to remain on duty without leave during the rain alert. Teams must inspect high-risk structures and verify the safety of neighbouring properties near excavation sites.
