GHMC cracks down on unlicensed hostels in Kukatpally, residents seek time

Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials on Saturday inspected a string of private hostels in Kukatpally and flagged RGW Ladies Hostel for running without valid trade and food licenses.

Despite being served four notices earlier, the hostel management did not respond, forcing authorities to move ahead with plans to seize the premises. When asked to vacate immediately, hostel residents questioned where they should go on such short notice.

Some women staying in the hostel claimed they were unaware of any licensing issues or previous notices. They requested two days to arrange alternate accommodation. GHMC staff agreed to return for the seizure after Monday evening, giving occupants time to shift.

Water Board teams also inspected hostels in SR Nagar, Ameerpet, Dilsukhnagar, and Kukatpally, finding several houses converted into hostels using domestic water connections. In some cases, hostel managers installed pumps to draw extra water illegally, or booked water tankers daily due to shortages. Officials booked cases against certain hostel operators for these irregularities.

Authorities warned that illegal hostel practices were rising in Hyderabad and would face strict action in the coming days.
