Hyderabad: Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi on Saturday appealed to city residents to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi in an eco-friendly and dignified manner. She, along with GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan, distributed clay Ganesh idols to employees and staff at the GHMC head office.
The Mayor said Ganesh Chaturthi, which is observed for ten days, was one of the city’s most significant festivals. She stressed that the civic body’s primary aim was to link the celebrations with environmental protection. Sanitation measures, street lighting, removal of tree branches, road repairs, immersion facilities with cranes, control rooms, baby ponds, excavator ponds, and temporary ponds had already been arranged to ensure smooth conduct of the festival, she added.
GHMC plans distribution of clay Ganesh idols
Vijayalakshmi urged organisers to remain vigilant to prevent untoward incidents at pandals and said sanitation would receive special focus during processions. About 25,000 workers would be deployed in three shifts to maintain cleanliness during the festival, she said.
The Mayor appealed to citizens to avoid Plaster of Paris idols and install clay idols instead. She announced that, like last year, the civic body had prepared plans to distribute two lakh clay idols at the field level. She said various departments were working in coordination to implement the measures effectively.
On the occasion, GHMC also distributed clay pots and earthen lamps made from C&D waste. Additional Commissioner (Sanitation & Health) Raghu Prasad, officials from different departments, and staff members attended the programme.
