Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) celebrated Independence Day by distributing ₹290 crore for livelihood and job support, alongside official flag-hoisting ceremonies.
Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi hoisted the national flag at the GHMC Commissioner’s Office. Commissioner R.V. Karnan and staff pledged to serve citizens with renewed dedication. The programme ended with a call for a cleaner, greener city.

On the eve of Independence Day, GHMC released ₹288.85 crore in loans to 2,597 self-help groups under the bank linkage scheme. It also gave ₹1.15 crore to 155 people to start small businesses, including 11 transgender people.
Four trained transgender candidates received job offers in graphic design. Five women completed driving training and obtained licences. Officials said these steps would boost income opportunities and promote self-reliance for marginalised communities.
