Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) launched a joint sanitation drive at Oliphanta Bridge on Sunday to fix drainage overflow and improve public hygiene. The effort came after several complaints from residents and commuters about waterlogging and foul smells in the area.
Swift cleaning operation
Teams from GHMC and HMWSSB worked through the morning to clear garbage, remove silt, and restore flow in the underground drains. Senior officials from both departments visited the site and guided field workers. Within hours, the teams removed the blockages that caused the overflow and restored normal drainage.
Workers also cleaned the roadside, cleared debris, and sprayed disinfectants to prevent infections. According to engineers, the cleaning drive would help stop mosquito breeding and reduce the risk of seasonal diseases.
Civic officials stress regular upkeep
GHMC officials said the Oliphanta Bridge sanitation drive was part of a larger plan to keep major roads clean and functional during the monsoon. They promised more such operations across key city junctions.
HMWSSB officials added that regular desilting would be carried out to avoid future blockages. They also appealed to citizens not to dump plastic or food waste into open drains. “Public support is vital to keep the system running,” an official said.
Residents appreciate quick action
Residents and shopkeepers around Oliphanta Bridge thanked the GHMC and HMWSSB for acting without delay. Many said that foul smell and stagnant water had become a daily problem for weeks. The quick response, they felt, restored normalcy and eased traffic flow near the bridge.
The GHMC announced that similar sanitation drives will soon be held in Mettuguda, Chaderghat, and other busy localities. Officials said the campaign aims to maintain cleaner, safer roads and promote better civic habits among citizens.
