HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has begun preparing a comprehensive action plan ahead of the upcoming monsoon season to prevent urban flooding and waterlogging, which are common challenges during heavy rains.
Drawing from the experiences of the past two years, the GHMC is analysing the difficulties faced by residents and the effectiveness of previous responses to formulate this year’s plan. A detailed report is being compiled to guide this effort.
Over 400 teams mobilised for monsoon response
To address emergencies during the rainy season, GHMC has readied 154 monsoon emergency teams and 252 static teams—bringing the total to more than 400 teams across the city. These teams will be deployed to swiftly address water stagnation, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
The corporation has also decided to keep water-draining machinery on standby, ready for deployment as soon as the Meteorological Department issues rain alerts.
₹55 crore nala cleaning drive underway
A key focus of the action plan is pre-monsoon nala cleaning. GHMC is executing 203 works at a cost of ₹55 crore. Of these, 120 works are currently in progress, while the tender process has been completed and work has begun on the remaining projects. The aim is to complete all works within the next two months, well ahead of the heavy rainfall.
Disaster response team under Hyderabad Water Works
In anticipation of emergency situations during the monsoon, a Disaster Response Force team will be formed under the supervision of Hyderabad Water Works. The team will act swiftly in coordination with municipal authorities to respond to critical situations.
Expert committees to finalise strategy
Special committees comprising GHMC and Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB or HMW Works) officials will be formed. These expert groups will assess conditions on the ground and offer recommendations to finalise the monsoon action plan.
The proactive approach reflects the city administration’s intent to minimise disruption and safeguard citizens during the monsoon months through timely intervention and inter-agency coordination.
