Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is set to roll out a ₹5 breakfast at Indiramma Canteens starting August 15, coinciding with Independence Day.
The initiative will expand the existing ₹5 meal programme by adding morning tiffin services at the same centres. GHMC is redesigning the canteens with new layouts in 40/10 and 20/10 dimensions to suit service requirements better. A prototype has been completed at the Mint Compound in Khairatabad, and final preparations are underway at the GHMC headquarters.
The revamped centres will display the GHMC logo alongside photos of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, along with images of food items offered.
Of the 150 canteens set up previously—one per division—128 remain operational. The breakfast menu will feature millet-based idlis, upma, pongal, and puris on a six-day schedule, with Sundays off. While the actual cost per meal is ₹19, beneficiaries will pay ₹5, with GHMC covering the ₹14 subsidy through the Hare Krishna Movement Charitable Foundation.
