Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) ordered closure of all meat shops in its limits on October 2. The date coincides with both Gandhi Jayanti and the Dasara festival. The civic body cited Section 533(B) of the GHMC Act, 1955. It also based the directive on Resolution No. 172 passed in the Standing Committee meeting on September 24.

Officials told staff to enforce the order and ensure no shop opens on the day. GHMC said the move would preserve the sanctity of Gandhi Jayanti.
The directive sparked strong reactions. Buyers complained about the closure coming on a key festival day. Many said they would face inconvenience as meat shops will remain closed during Dasara.
