Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has rolled out a first-of-its-kind initiative, bringing in robots to clean the city’s stormwater drains. The pilot project is aimed at curbing flooding, traffic jams and waterlogging that routinely hit the city during the monsoon.
The trial started in Circle-12, where robotic machines fitted with CCTV cameras were deployed to clear blockages at major junctions. GHMC Chief Engineer (Maintenance) Sahadev Ratnakar inspected the operations at NMDC Junction in Mehdipatnam.
Robotic cleaning to prevent monsoon chaos
According to officials, the robots can precisely detect and remove obstacles, desilt drains quickly and improve water flow. The method is expected to enhance drainage capacity and cut down water stagnation during heavy rains. GHMC said strict safety standards will be followed to protect both field workers and residents.
GHMC turns to technology for civic issues
Commissioner R.V. Karnan said the civic body is relying on advanced technology to address urban challenges. “We have launched robotic drain cleaning as a pilot. If it succeeds, Hyderabad will see fewer overflowing drains, traffic disruptions and flooding in low-lying areas,” he said.
