GHMC has transferred 139 sanitation jawans to enhance efficiency and transparency in sanitation services. The Telangana government has also approved the recruitment of 1,578 new sanitation workers to improve waste management.
HYDERABAD: In a major administrative overhaul, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has transferred 139 sanitation jawans who had been stationed in the same locations for over five years. The move, directed by GHMC Commissioner Ilambarthi, aims to enhance efficiency and transparency in sanitation services across the city.
The mass transfers are among the largest workforce shifts in recent years and are intended to prevent stagnation, improve service delivery, and ensure a fair distribution of responsibilities. GHMC currently employs 259 sanitation jawans, with an overall workforce of 27,000, including 19,000 sanitation workers. Additionally, the corporation relies on 25,000 outsourced personnel for sanitation, entomology, veterinary, horticulture, and transport services.
In response to Hyderabad’s growing waste management challenges, the Telangana government has sanctioned the recruitment of 1,578 new sanitation workers, each receiving a monthly wage of ₹15,600. This step aims to ease the workload on existing staff and enhance hygiene standards across the city. Previously, on May 1, 2023, then-Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao had announced a ₹1,000 salary hike for sanitation workers as a “May Day Gift,” benefiting over 1 lakh workers across Telangana.
While the large-scale transfers are seen as a strategic move to improve workforce management, they also bring attention to the challenges posed by political influence in staff placements. The Telangana government’s focus on recruitment and wage revision underscores its commitment to sanitation and worker welfare in Hyderabad.
