Hyderabad: Union Minister of Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy on Saturday praised the Geological Survey of India (GSI) for its pivotal role in mineral exploration and national development. Speaking at a “Swachhotsav” event held at the GSI Southern Region office in Bandlaguda-Nagole, Hyderabad, the minister inaugurated four innovative ‘Waste to Wealth’ models as part of the Swachhata Hi Seva 2025 campaign.
Addressing officials and participants, Kishan Reddy lauded GSI’s contributions to the Swachh Bharat Mission and underscored its central role in India’s mineral mapping efforts, particularly in coal exploration.

“Coal generates 74% of India’s electricity,” Reddy stated. “Without coal, there is no electricity. Without electricity, there is no industry, and without industry, no development.” He credited GSI for 175 years of service in identifying crucial resources like coal and other minerals that power India’s growth.
He also distributed sanitation kits to sanitation workers from both GHMC and GSI as part of the event’s outreach.
Hundreds join Swachhotsav rally and cleaning drive at GSI Hyderabad
The event began with a ‘Swachhotsav’ rally from Anand Nagar Junction to the GSI office gate, led by Basab Mukhopadhyay, Additional Director General and Head of Department, Southern Region. A mass cleaning drive followed, drawing nearly 400 participants, including senior officials, GSI staff, local corporate representatives, and community members.
Senior officers such as DDGs, Directors, and local residents actively joined the initiative, reinforcing the importance of community engagement in environmental stewardship.
