HYDERABAD: Former minister and Siddipet MLA Harish Rao strongly defended the Kaleshwaram project, questioning those who claimed it had failed. He criticized the Congress government for neglecting the state’s irrigation projects and warned that history would not forgive them if they continued to ignore Telangana’s water needs.
During a visit to the Ranganayaka Sagar project in Chinnakoduru mandal, Siddipet constituency, Harish Rao stated that the Congress should open its eyes to reality. He sarcastically asked those who doubted Kaleshwaram’s functionality, “If the project has failed, where is this water coming from?”
Harish Rao acknowledged the efforts of Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy for releasing 1 TMC of water from Ananthsagar to Ranganayaka Sagar, which would help irrigate 50,000 acres of farmland in the Siddipet region. He thanked Reddy for acting upon his request, ensuring that farmers received water in time for their crops.
Congress is Trying to Erase BRS Achievements
Harish Rao alleged that the Congress government was attempting to erase the good work done by the previous BRS administration. He emphasized that while certain regions like Tungaturthi, Kodad, Suryapet, and Bhupalpally were facing water shortages under SRSP Stage 2, Kaleshwaram was still providing irrigation for two crop cycles.
He pointed out that 15 reservoirs, 23 km of tunnels, 19 substations, 21 pump houses, and pressure mains of the Kaleshwaram project remain functional. While one pillar in one block at Medigadda had sunk, he accused Congress of exaggerating the issue to defame the BRS.
Government Must Complete Pending Irrigation Works
Harish Rao criticized the Congress government for failing to repair the Medigadda pillars even after 15 months in power. He lamented that while Godavari waters were flowing into the sea, the government was not lifting them for irrigation, which could save thousands of acres of farmland.
He accused the Congress of acting out of spite against KCR and BRS, neglecting farmers’ interests in the process. Rao reminded them that the crops growing under Ranganayaka Sagar, Ananthsagar, and Mallanna Sagar were all due to the Kaleshwaram project.
Harish Rao demanded that the government complete the pending irrigation canal works, stating that this would not only benefit farmers but also boost fish farming, providing income to fishermen. He urged the government not to neglect such a crucial project that impacts multiple sectors of the economy.
