Hyderabad: Former Minister T. Harish Rao has expressed deep concern over a spate of student deaths and food-related incidents in Telangana’s Gurukul schools, warning that parents in rural areas are living in fear.
In a post on social media platform X, the BRS leader cited multiple cases, including the recent death of a student at Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Boys Gurukul College in Karunapuram, Hanumakonda district. He also referenced the suicide of a girl student in the BC Girls Gurukul School in Toopranpet, Bhongir district.
In another case, 15 girls were hospitalized due to contaminated food at the ST Girls Gurukul School in Devarakonda, Nalgonda district. Separately, students at a BC Gurukul School in Shahmirpet mandal, Medchal district, were served insect-infested rice, prompting street protests by the children.
Harish Rao said such incidents have become common since the Congress came to power, claiming that 93 student deaths have occurred in government schools and hostels in the past 20 months.
He demanded accountability and questioned who was responsible for the rising number of deaths and suicides in Gurukul institutions. Rao called on the state government to take immediate steps to prevent student suicides and ensure hygienic, quality food in hostels.
