Hyderabad: BRS senior leader and former minister T. Harish Rao on Wednesday hit out at the Congress-led Telangana government, accusing it of political apathy and negligence towards farmers’ irrigation needs.
Reacting to the belated activation of Kalwakurthy project motors, Rao said the move was forced by his party’s public pressure and protests, calling it a success of the BRS and former CM K. Chandrashekhar Rao’s foresight.
“Would the government have acted if we hadn’t asked questions? Would farmers’ needs be noticed without agitation?” Rao questioned on social media, indirectly targeting Chief Minister Revanth Reddy.
He criticised the administration’s alleged failure to manage upstream inflows, calling it a cruel lapse. “Letting go of water from upper riparian states instead of conserving it is not just careless it’s criminal,” he said.
Rao demanded that the government abandon “political vendetta” and prioritise farmers’ welfare. He urged the immediate reactivation of motors at the Kaleshwaram project, similar to Kalwakurthy, to ensure reservoir levels rise and irrigation water reaches fields.
He cautioned the Congress government that continued indifference to agrarian distress would provoke serious backlash, and called for irrigation to be treated as a top policy priority.
