Heavy rain pushes Hussain Sagar to brim in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Overnight heavy rain lashed Hyderabad on Thursday, sending large volumes of runoff surging into the Hussain Sagar from Kukatpally, Khairatabad and Begumpet. The lake swelled to near capacity, prompting flood warnings for residents downstream.

By 11 a.m. on Friday, the water level had reached 513.63 metres against its full reservoir level of 514 metres. Inflows stood at 1,234 cusecs, while outflows were measured at 1,523 cusecs. Officials maintained that the release was necessary to prevent overflow and urged people in low-lying areas to remain on alert.

Hussain Sagar Hyderabad records high inflow after storm

The sudden spike in inflow followed hours of intense downpour across the city’s northern and western zones. Storm drains and feeder channels channelled the excess water into the century-old lake, rapidly lifting its level. Authorities kept a close watch on the outflow gates to manage the surge and reduce the risk to nearby neighbourhoods.
