Hyderabad: Heavy rains lashed Telangana and Greater Hyderabad, filling Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar with heavy inflows. The continuous downpour forced the irrigation department to lift gates and discharge water into the Musi river.
Authorities confirmed that a total of eight gates were opened at the twin reservoirs. The combined discharge reached 8,000 cusecs, swelling Musi and raising danger levels for residents along its banks. The GHMC issued a red alert and warned people in catchment areas to remain vigilant.
Twin reservoirs release 8,000 cusecs into Musi
At Himayat Sagar, officials raised four gates by four feet and released 5,215 cusecs into Musi. Inflow levels there touched 5,500 cusecs, matching the scale of outflow. At Osman Sagar, another four gates were opened to release 2,800 cusecs, while inflow climbed to 2,300 cusecs.
The sudden surge of water turned Musi into a torrent. It raced through Jiyaguda, Puranapul, Chaderghat and Moosarambagh, inundating temples and dhobi ghats. The 100-feet road at Jiyaguda was closed after floodwater entered the stretch. Authorities confirmed that discharge from the reservoirs would continue until water levels stabilised.
