Hyderabad: The Meteorological Department forecast heavy rain across Telangana on Sunday and Monday after a Bay of Bengal cyclone crossed the Odisha coast near Gopalpur and weakened into a deep depression. The system, now moving inland, will continue to influence Telangana weather.
Officials said the associated circulation extends up to 4.5 kilometres above sea level, with a trough running from the system’s centre across Telangana into Maharashtra and Goa. Therefore, strong winds of 40–50 kilometres per hour with thunderstorms and lightning are likely.
Cyclone system weakening into depression expected to bring heavy rains in Telangana districts
Rainfall data underscored the system’s intensity. Between 8 a.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday, Mominpet in Vikarabad district recorded 15.1 centimetres, the state’s highest. Consequently, heavy rain in Ranga Reddy and Vikarabad pushed the Musi River to overflow along several stretches.
Further showers followed in the 12 hours ending 8 p.m. Saturday: Lingayipalli in Medak logged 10.4 centimetres; Manuru in Sangareddy 9.2; Medipalli in Warangal 9.1; and Asifabad 6.1 centimetres. Together, these figures show multiple districts faced continuous heavy rain.
Meanwhile, the weather office indicated another circulation may form over the north Andaman Sea by September 30. This could develop into a low-pressure area over the central Bay of Bengal by October 1, potentially driving further rainfall over Telangana and neighbouring states.
