Hyderabad: Heavy rains since Tuesday increased inflows into Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar reservoirs on Hyderabad’s outskirts. Responding quickly, officials from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) lifted several gates to release excess water downstream.
Heavy inflows force gate operation
HMWS&SB engineers said catchment areas received nonstop rain, pushing water levels close to the full capacity. Therefore, the team opened 10 gates of Osman Sagar by two feet and released 2,630 cusecs into the Musi River. At Himayat Sagar, they raised four gates by two feet to manage the surge.
The water level at Himayat Sagar reached 1,762.25 feet, while Osman Sagar touched 1,788.85 feet. Meanwhile, engineers monitored the inflow and adjusted the discharge based on real-time rainfall data.
Authorities alert residents near Musi
The Water Board advised residents along the Musi River to stay cautious as the discharge increased. If needed, emergency teams would move people to rehabilitation centres. Moreover, Managing Director of HMWS&SB ordered officials to inspect embankments and report every change in water flow.
Roads closed due to rising floodwater
Floodwater flowed over the Manchirevula culvert, prompting authorities to block vehicle movement. Consequently, police diverted traffic through alternate routes until water levels dropped. Field teams stayed on duty to assist commuters and monitor nearby low-lying areas.
Officials said they would continue operations round the clock to prevent damage or loss.
