Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) announced that one gate of the Himayath Sagar reservoir will be opened at 10:00 PM on Thursday following intense rainfall in the catchment area and further forecasts of heavy downpour.
The decision came after the India Meteorological Department reported cloudburst-like conditions in parts of the city, with rainfall intensity reaching up to 100 mm per hour. GHMC issued an emergency alert warning of flash floods and advised residents to stay off low-lying and waterlogged routes. The downpour is expected to continue for at least two more hours.
Officials have urged residents downstream of Himayath Sagar to remain alert and avoid venturing near riverbanks. All department teams have been placed on standby to manage any fallout from the release. Emergency helplines—040-21111111 and 100—have been activated for assistance.
