Delhi, January 7: The number of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in India has risen to eight, with two new infections reported in Nagpur, Maharashtra, on Tuesday. The infected individuals are a 13-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy.
Both children were experiencing persistent cold and fever. Following tests conducted by a private laboratory, their reports confirmed HMPV infection. However, neither child required hospitalisation, and their condition has improved with treatment.
Earlier, six cases were reported across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Gujarat, with most infections detected among children. Karnataka and Tamil Nadu each reported two cases, while West Bengal and Gujarat registered one case each.
In response to the rising cases, the central government has advised states to strengthen surveillance of respiratory illnesses, particularly ‘Influenza-Like Illnesses’ (ILI) and ‘Severe Acute Respiratory Infections’ (SARI). States have also been urged to spread awareness about HMPV to prevent further spread.
Union Health Minister JP Nadda addressed concerns, stating that HMPV is not a new virus and that the government is closely monitoring the situation. Health officials are working to ensure effective management and containment of the infections.
