Beware of fake kidnap calls, says Hyderabad CP Sajjanar

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar has warned citizens to remain alert against a rising wave of cybercrime involving fake phone calls claiming child abduction. He issued the caution through a social media post, urging the public not to panic.

Kidnap scam calls use emotional manipulation

Sajjanar said cybercriminals are now using disturbing tactics such as calling parents and playing crying sounds of children, falsely claiming they have kidnapped their child. The caller often pretends to be from the police or another authority and uses the child’s name to increase credibility and fear.

“Fear and greed are the two biggest weapons for cybercriminals,” he noted, adding that increased public awareness is the only way to counter these threats.

Police urge people not to share personal data online

The Commissioner advised parents and citizens to never share personal information especially about their children or relatives—on social media. He explained that scammers often use these details to tailor their fake calls and messages.

He also urged citizens to report any threatening or suspicious calls immediately to local police or by calling the helpline number 1930. Reports can also be filed via the National Cyber Crime Portal at http://cybercrime.gov.in.

“Do not panic if you receive such a call. Stay calm and report it,” Sajjanar stressed.
