Hyderabad: In a rare surgical case at Gandhi Hospital, doctors removed a 25-paise coin lodged in a woman’s intestines for over two decades. The 28-year-old had unknowingly swallowed the coin when she was three years old.
The woman, who had not experienced symptoms until recently, developed severe abdominal pain while undergoing physical fitness drills for a police job. The strain triggered intestinal pressure, prompting her to seek emergency care.
A scan at Gandhi Hospital revealed a foreign object in her intestines. Surgeons discovered both the coin and a stone lodged at the junction of the small and large intestines, causing a twist and pain.
The surgical team—Dr. Rajesh Kongara, Dr. Irshad, and Dr. Abhinav Chari—operated under the supervision of Prof. Poornia, head of the surgical department. The procedure lasted over three and a half hours.
Doctors confirmed the coin was the same 25-paise denomination the patient swallowed as a child. The woman is recovering and expected to be discharged within a week.
