Hyderabad: An 81-year-old man from Ameerpet in Hyderabad lost ₹7.11 lakh in a cyber fraud. Scammers posed as a woman on WhatsApp and manipulated him through emotional blackmail.
Police said the incident began in June. The victim started receiving messages and calls from a woman who identified herself as Maya Rajput. The chats soon turned friendly. Over time, the fraudsters gained his trust. After building a rapport, they launched their extortion plan.
The woman claimed she was in distress. She cited urgent medical expenses and the need to reclaim pledged gold jewellery. Believing her story, the elderly man transferred money in instalments to the number she gave.

Police registered a case and began an investigation to track the culprits. Officials warned that fraudsters often exploit the elderly through new scams, playing on emotions and trust to steal money.
