Encroachments choke Hyderabad drains, 49 flood complaints hit HYDRAA

Hyderabad flood complaints

Hyderabad: Heavy rains led to a surge in flood-related complaints across Hyderabad on Tuesday. A total of 49 complaints were registered on the HYDRAA Prajavani platform, with more than 30 linked to nala encroachments and waterlogging in residential areas.

People from several neighbourhoods said illegal buildings had blocked stormwater drains. As a result, floodwater entered homes instead of flowing into nearby lakes or tanks. They blamed these encroachments for turning low-lying areas into flood zones.

Encroachment complaints flood HYDRAA

In Ameenpur village of Sangareddy, residents said a diverted drain from Bandankommu tank had flooded eight colonies. They visited HYDRAA officials in large numbers and demanded urgent steps to stop further damage.

After reviewing the complaints, the HYDRA Commissioner assigned follow-up responsibilities to the concerned departments. In some cases, he promised to visit the sites himself for a direct assessment.

Area-wise issues reported

  • Krishna Nagar, Yousufguda: Residents reported sewage mixing with floodwater during even light rain. Though some silt had been cleared, they urged authorities to widen the nala fully to avoid more problems.

  • Mayurinagar, Miyapur: Locals said a man named Abbulu had built over a drain, creating stagnant water. A welfare group pointed out that a compound wall had worsened the situation, leaving water trapped in the area.

  • Madhavanagar, Kukatpally: Residents complained that outsiders were trying to take over six acres meant for public use. Around 500 families live in the layout. They requested that the space be kept for the community as originally planned.

  • Thatti Annaram, Abdullapurmet (Rangareddy): Shreyas Institute of Engineering and Technology said a wall built across a canal had blocked water flow. Students could not reach the college. Despite earlier complaints to civic and irrigation officials, no solution had been provided.

  • Saheb Nagar Khalan, Hayathnagar (Rangareddy): Residents reported flooding from Kappala Cheruvu. Overflowing water had entered homes in nearby colonies like Sagar Complex and Hariharpuram. Locals asked for immediate flood control measures.
