Hyderabad: Hyderabad gold thefts triggered fresh concerns as burglars looted jewellery and cash worth nearly ₹20 lakh from homes in Chandanagar and Miyapur. The incidents come amid a recent spike in precious metal prices, drawing thieves to high-value targets.
Hyderabad gold thefts escalate across Chandanagar, Miyapur
On October 6, thieves broke into two locked houses in Chandanagar. In one case, they looted 18 tola of gold, 60 tola of silver, and cash from the home of Sitarammurthy, a retired BHEL employee. His family had left for a religious visit to the Satya Sai Baba trust on September 29. They discovered the theft after returning on October 5 and filed a complaint with Chandanagar police.
Just two days earlier, on the night of October 4, burglars struck in Miyapur. They targeted the home of Vijay Kumar, a head constable working at Miyapur police station. The gang escaped with five tola of gold and ₹40,000 in cash. Kumar lodged a complaint soon after.
Residents blamed police inaction for the rise in thefts. They pointed out similar burglaries at jewellery shops and temples in recent weeks. Locals demanded stricter patrolling and quicker response from authorities.
Police launched investigations in both cases. They are reviewing CCTV footage and tracking possible links to earlier thefts. Officials suspect that a single gang may be targeting multiple neighbourhoods across the city.
