HYDERABAD: The city of Hyderabad is witnessing a rapid decline in groundwater levels, raising serious concerns. Borewells are drying up, and large-scale illegal water theft is being reported in nearly 40 localities where motor pumps have been unlawfully installed. As a result, the supply of drinking water to several other areas has been severely affected.
In response to the rampant theft of water through illegal motor pumps connected to pipelines, the Water Works Board has launched a special campaign. Since the 15th of this month, approximately 700 illegally installed motor pumps have been seized.
The special drive has seen participation from officials across all levels, from junior staff to senior administrators. Water Works Board Managing Director Ashok Reddy personally conducted surprise inspections in various localities over the past ten days.
Authorities emphasised that in order to ensure equitable drinking water supply for all residents, strict action against illegal activities is essential.
