Hyderabad: Record rainfall battered the city for over ninety minutes on Thursday night, flooding streets and swelling the Himayat Sagar reservoir to full capacity. Authorities responded by raising one gate by a foot to release water downstream, warning residents in low-lying areas to remain on alert.
The downpour, which began on August 7 night, sent 1,000 cusecs of inflow into the reservoir. Of this, 350 cusecs were discharged into the Musi River. Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board managing director Ashok Reddy advised residents to avoid the reservoir’s catchment zone, while GHMC and Hyderabad traffic police issued alerts to communities along the Musi’s course.
After days of relentless downpours, the Hyderabad district administration has swung into action with a set of emergency flood-control measures.
The Collectorate has opened a 24/7 control room to log and respond to complaints about waterlogged homes, snarled traffic, and power cuts. Residents needing help can call 040-2302813 or 74166 87878.
Collector Hari Chandan has also scrapped all leave for revenue officials, ordering them to stay on the ground and work in tandem with the GHMC, traffic police, and the water board to keep the city running. The aim: respond quickly, patch up problem spots, and keep the chaos from spiralling further.
