HYDERABAD: Mental health conditions in Hyderabad have reached alarming levels, according to a recent Mental Health Survey. The findings, part of the Mental State of the World Report 2024, revealed that the city scored just 58.3 on the mental health index—well below the global average of 63 and the lowest among Indian cities.
The survey, conducted by Sapien Labs, covered around 75,000 individuals aged between 18 and 55. Shailendra Swaminathan, Director at Sapien Labs, stated that the survey assessed various aspects of mental health including emotional balance, social connections, and psychological stress. He highlighted that mental health deterioration was particularly severe among Hyderabad’s youth, which he described as a deeply concerning trend.
Experts attributed the poor mental health outcomes to several contributing factors such as prolonged stress, substance abuse, poverty, and excessive use of social media. Overuse of smartphones was also identified as a significant trigger for anxiety, depression, and irritability, especially among younger individuals.
The results underscore the urgent need for serious attention to mental health issues in Hyderabad. Experts have called on the government and relevant agencies to implement effective measures to promote mental well-being and ensure the overall welfare of the city’s residents.
