Hyderabad: L&T Hyderabad Metro Rail Corporation has scheduled the launch of 14 new trains during the 2024–25 financial year and begun phased overhauls of older units, targeting full completion by 2027.
Trains that have logged over one million kilometres are undergoing comprehensive maintenance. The current fleet includes 57 trains operating daily across the city. Originally imported from South Korea in 2015, the coaches have remained in uninterrupted service for nearly a decade.
Metro trains currently run more than 1,000 daily trips across 69.2 kilometres on three corridors, with individual trains averaging around 25,000 kilometres of daily travel. Barring a six-month suspension during the COVID-19 pandemic, each train has clocked an average of 1.5 lakh kilometres annually over the past seven years.
Periodic overhauls completed in 2024–25 cover the highest-mileage trains. The rest will be serviced in phases. Each three-coach set undergoes detailed inspection at the Uppal Metro Depot, including disassembly and review of the engine, braking systems, suspension, gearboxes, and control equipment. Worn or damaged components are replaced, and final safety checks conducted before returning to service.
Metro authorities said these overhauls are critical for extending service life and ensuring commuter safety.
As Hyderabad expands beyond the Outer Ring Road towards the Regional Ring Road, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority’s jurisdiction is set to increase to 7,257 sq km. The current population of 1.45 crore is projected to reach 3 crore by 2045.
In response, the Telangana government has prioritised public transport infrastructure, initiating a master plan centred around a Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP). One component, the Estimated Public Transport Report, is complete, with the full CMP due in August.
According to the latest CMP update, large-scale metro expansion will be essential by 2050. Concurrently, TSRTC continues to play a key role in public transit, with surveys underway in the HMDA region.
