Hyderabad: Hyderabad City Police on Sunday issued a detailed rebuttal to serious allegations made by BRS working president and Sircilla MLA K.T. Rama Rao, who accused police of wrongly invoking attempt-to-murder charges against Smt. Swetha, wife of Gellu Srinivas Yadav, in connection with the Jubilee Hills violence case (FIR No. 441/2025).
In a press note, the Hyderabad Police clarified that no attempt-to-murder sections have been applied against Swetha. “She was not present at the site of the violent attack on Mahaa News and has no direct role in the assault,” the statement said. The charges against her stem from alleged obstruction during a police search for Gellu Srinivas and her role in concealing a mobile phone central to the investigation.
The FIR followed a June 28 complaint from Mahaa News Executive Editor Dr. K. Ajitha, who reported that a mob of BRSV activists had attacked their Jubilee Hills office, pelting stones, smashing windows, injuring staff, and issuing death threats. The attackers reportedly used abusive and gendered language before fleeing the scene.
Gellu Srinivas Yadav was later identified as the prime accused. Police traced him to MLA Quarters, Flat No. 1209, where his wife Swetha allegedly locked herself inside and refused entry for nearly an hour. Investigators confirmed the phone was present at the residence, and later discovered it had been handed off to a driver with instructions from Gellu to erase its data.
Swetha was charged under Section 238 of the BNS for concealing evidence and providing false information. The police stressed that her involvement was limited to obstruction and that the investigation is being conducted per legal procedure.
The department condemned what it called a politically motivated smear campaign, asserting its neutrality and commitment to justice. “Public figures must refrain from politicizing active investigations,” the police warned, noting that such actions harm both morale and due process.
