Hyderabad: Continuous overnight rain drenched the city on Wednesday, leaving many areas waterlogged and causing severe inconvenience to residents. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert, warning of more heavy spells with thunderstorms and lightning.
Since Tuesday night, uninterrupted showers have flooded low-lying colonies in Miyapur, Kukatpally, LB Nagar, and parts of the Old City. Traffic slowed to a crawl on arterial roads. Vendors selling Ganesh idols and puja material ahead of Vinayaka Chavithi also faced losses as their stalls were soaked.
Hyderabad and 16 Telangana districts under orange alert
IMD Hyderabad Director Dr. Nagaratna advised citizens to step out only for essential needs. “People should avoid venturing out unless necessary,” she said. She explained that the widespread downpour resulted from a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.
The IMD also issued an orange alert for 16 districts: Hanumakonda, Warangal, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Mahabubabad, Mancherial, Peddapalli, Asifabad, Mulugu, Rajanna-Sircilla, Jangaon, Medak, Wanaparthy, Kamareddy, Nirmal, and Narayanpet. These districts are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rains with thunderstorms and lightning.
Persistent rainfall has swollen rivers, streams, and rivulets, inundating several villages. Officials warned farmers, herders, and residents to stay away from canals and avoid crossing overflowing streams.
Dr. Nagaratna said heavy rain may continue through Wednesday. Light to moderate showers are expected across the state for the next two days. District administrations remain on high alert to monitor flood-prone areas and ensure safety during Vinayaka Chavithi festivities.
