Hyderabad: Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Sunday said that mandatory recharge pits in homes are the only sustainable solution to Hyderabad’s water crisis.
In a post on X, he explained that rapid construction and concrete surfaces prevent rainwater from reaching the soil. As a result, groundwater levels are falling, and more residents now rely on water tankers.
The Minister stressed that every house in the city must include a recharge pit. Without such efforts, he warned that Hyderabad’s growing population could face extreme water shortages in the future.
Government aims to build 16,000 recharge pits in 2025
Ponnam reminded that state rules require recharge pits for buildings on plots above 300 square metres. Moreover, this is a condition for receiving a water connection.
He pointed out that the city loses millions of litres of rainwater each year to stormwater drains. Capturing this water could recharge the aquifers and reduce flooding risks during heavy rains.
The government has set a target to build 16,000 pits across Hyderabad this year. Hyderabad Metro Water Board, GHMC and HMDA are coordinating this mission.

Additionally, rainwater harvesting systems are being installed at public venues, schools, and housing colonies. Ponnam urged residents to support the effort and build pits in their homes.
“Water saved today will ensure our children don’t face scarcity tomorrow,” he said.
