HYDRAA clears plastic-choked nalas in Hyderabad ahead of monsoon

Hyderabad: Even a brief spell of rain turns Hyderabad’s roads into virtual lakes, choking traffic and causing misery to commuters. Blocked nalas overflowing onto roads are the key reason, with drains routinely stuffed with everything from chocolate wrappers to plastic bottles and plates. Despite repeated warnings from the government, public habits have hardly changed.

To tackle the situation, the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Monitoring and Protection (HYDRAA) swung into action on Friday, launching desilting operations in nalas and culverts around Yusufguda.

Following orders from HYDRAA Commissioner Ranganath, monsoon emergency teams were deployed on dry-weather days to carry out advance cleaning. Workers focused on the nalas in Madhura Nagar and Krishnanagar, removing large amounts of accumulated silt and waste.

In the process, tons of plastic debris and garbage were pulled out. HYDRAA teams also desilted the nala flowing from Mantra Cheruvu in LB Nagar circle to Jillelaguda Cheruvu, clearing blockages before the peak monsoon hits.

Residents welcomed HYDRAA’s proactive desilting drive, noting that the timely work could prevent urban flooding. Many citizens expressed appreciation for the agency’s efforts, with some even calling it “hats off” for taking up the work in advance.
