Hyderabad: HYDRAA (Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Monitoring and Protection) officials on Monday removed encroachments around Sunnam Cheruvu at Madhapur, demolishing illegal huts and bore motors set up within the Full Tank Level limits. The demolition drive began in the morning hours.
HYDRAA is executing a Rs 10 crore plan to restore the 32-acre Sunnam Cheruvu, where large-scale encroachments and unauthorised water trading have been reported for years. Officials had earlier cautioned residents not to tap groundwater from the lake zone.
Separately, around three weeks ago, HYDRAA cleared encroachments near Patni Nala at Rasulpura Centre. Three buildings covering roughly 150 metres were razed, after which the Nala was partially restored from a reduced width of 15 feet back towards its original 18 feet. Encroachments in that area had caused severe flooding in nearby colonies with even minimal rainfall, leaving Paiga Colony, Patni Compound, Patni Colony, Vimananagar, BHEL Colony, and Indiramma Nagar waterlogged during downpours as low as 2.5 cm.
The problem, pending for years due to legal disputes, prompted residents to approach HYDRA recently when flooding worsened.
