Hyderabad: HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath on Thursday inspected several flood-hit colonies in Hyderabad and directed officials to provide immediate and permanent solutions to waterlogging issues.
The Commissioner visited Gayatri Colony in Ameerpet, Amar Society in Madhapur, and Shriramnagar in Baghlingampally. He noted that clearing silt from drains in Ameerpet had improved water flow and asked officials to apply the same method elsewhere. Residents of Gayatrinagar, behind Maithri Vanam, requested similar action to resolve flooding in their area. Ranganath assured them that desilting of upstream drains was already underway and promised further measures.
Need to lower water levels in Durgam Cheruvu
Locals told the Commissioner that rising water levels in Durgam Cheruvu were flooding Amar Society and nearby colonies. They urged that lowering the lake’s level could ease the problem. Ranganath said he would discuss the matter with Irrigation and GHMC officials and stressed the need to prepare for extreme rainfall events, pointing out that a cloudburst had recently brought more than 15 cm of rain within an hour.
Solution for Shriramnagar issue within two days
In Shriramnagar, Baghlingampally, Ranganath ordered immediate drainage works. He directed construction of a dedicated drain connecting Shriramnagar to the Hussain Sagar floodwater channel, with a slight extension before the connection to avoid bottlenecks. He instructed officials to act within two days.
Residents informed him that the earlier drain was closed and encroachments on government land worsened flooding. Waist-deep water has left hundreds of homes inaccessible, and pumping efforts have failed. They appealed for a new drain through vacant land to connect with Hussain Sagar.
